In the early 1980s, I visited friends in California, every surfer’s dream – or so I thought as a passionate sailor and surfer.
But first of all, my friends who were lifeguards with the Lifeguard Division of the Los Angeles County Fire Department (better known as “Bay Watch”) instructed me in the safety guidelines…even in seemingly always sunny and carefree California, the Pacific can be very dangerous.

Rescue & Recovery – were the standards and guidelines for rescue and recovery of people and equipment for every lifeguard. I was fascinated by the speed, professionalism and determination of the young lifeguards when they carried out a drill or actually went on a mission.
